Cheapest place to get bed & mattress
Main Post:
My husband needs a new bed, he has a bad back and his (battered, lumpy) mattress should have been replaced years ago. I think he should probably downsize to a full (from a queen) since we're moving to a smaller place. We don't have a frame for his current bed, it's just sitting on a box spring on the floor. Yes, I am very classy.
I'm reluctant to buy a used mattress.
Any suggestions gratefully received, thanks!
Top Comment: A mattress is not something you should cheap out on. Getting a quality mattress that is comfortable is key in preventing and helping with back issues. You can get away with a cheap metal bed frame.
Best affordable mattress tips for someone who refuses to finance a bed
Main Post:
Started looking at mattresses and HOLY CRAP the prices! Like who has $2000+ just lying around for a bed?? And don't even get me started on those "0% APR for 36 months" deals. I refuse to finance furniture, that's where bad financial decisions live.
I'm looking for a good affordable mattress that won't break the bank but also won't leave me crippled. My budget is around $500-800 max (queen size). I know that's not a lot in the mattress world, but I'm hoping someone here has found a diamond in the rough.
Has anyone found a genuinely good mattress that doesn't feel like sleeping on cardboard? I'm not picky about brand names, I just want something that'll last more than 2 years and won't give me back pain.
Also, is there actually a difference between "memory foam" and "responsive foam" or is that just marketing BS?
TIA for any recommendations!
Top Comment: Ikea has affordable mattresses. Lots of options <$300.
cheap bed frame alternatives when you don’t want to buy from amazon?

are there any good ones? thanks
Top Comment: Goodwill sells both beds and metall bedframes. Important to note that the beds are not used, they are donated by mattress companies for write offs.
Best affordable mattress advice needed, spent all my money on the house!
Main Post:
Just closed on my first house last month and I'm FINALLY moved in after what felt like a million signatures and anxiety attacks. One small problem...
I spent pretty much all my money on the down payment and now I'm sleeping on a 10-year-old mattress that moved with me from 3 different apartments. My back is KILLING me after this moving, and I need to find the best affordable mattress (because, you know, I have approximately $17 left after buying this damn house 😂).
I've been researching online for the best affordable mattress options but getting completely overwhelmed with all the options. They all claim to be the best cheap bed or whatever and cost a month's mortgage payment!
There are like 500 different mattress companies and they all sound the same. My budget is around $800 for a queen (absolute max), and I'd prefer something that will last at least 5+ years since I just committed to a 30-year mortgage lol.
Anyone else go through this? What's the best affordable mattress you found that actually held up? Did you go memory foam, hybrid, or traditional? And did you find any good Memorial Day sales? (I'm hoping to buy this weekend... but could totally survive a few more weeks if it means serious savings $$$.)
Edit: Thanks everyone for all the recommendations!
I decided to go with the Boring Hybrid Mattress https://www.boring.co/products/hybrid-mattress that someone suggested. It was right around my budget at $800 for a queen, and the 365-night trial was a big selling point for me.
Will update after a few months to let you all know how it holds up. Really appreciate all the advice!
Top Comment: I’m not gonna sugarcoat it honestly, you did get kinda scammed. I’m not saying the boring is a bad mattress, its definitely up there but for the price they’re selling at, it's mostly the marketing around it that’s jacked up the price that hard. There’s a couple of better hybrids out there, mate for like half the price honestly even for a queen. I honestly think more people need to shop around a bit on Amazon first, there’s a few really good deals and they’re not gonna be heirloom pieces but they’ll last a good while. Throwing the Ego White in for anyone still browsing through. Its not downy by any means but a really good firm that feels sturdy, yk? Cooling gel and all that jazz, of course cos its trending but their tech honestly does make a difference with the breathability of it all. If its the summer though, make sure you’re using only bamboo cotton bedsheets, no linens so you can really feel the breeze through. Setting it up is a bit of a toughie though, so read the instructions carefully is all I’ll say. Lemme know if you’re in the market for a couple other big buys btw, they don’t call me the budget queen for nothing.

Good places to buy cheap bedding (bed sheets + quilts/duvets), pillows and kitchenware (bowls, plates, cutlery) in Nijmegen?
Main Post:
Hi, we’re international exchange students who have just arrived in Nijmegen. We’re loving it so far, however we’re without the essentials in our accommodation so we just need pointing in the right direction. Thanks for taking the time to help.

Cheap bed options?

Want to buy new. Thinking about buying the Zinus Memory Foam Green Tea 12 inch queen sized mattress as it is most popular on amazon with great reviews. Does anyone have it that wants to share their experience? Do you need a box spring to go along with it? Just a frame?
Top Comment:
Both me and my wife ended up getting that exact mattress in a full. I have never been picky about a mattress and I love. She has been picky about mattresses and loves it. Going to get the king soon.
Her mom was upset because they spent significantly more on a brand name mattress and she likes the zinus one more.
It really feels like sleeping on a marshmallow. Firm but soft. It might take a couple nights to get used to the firmness if you haven't used a memory foam mattress.
Tl:Dr I love mine and highly recommended the zinus green tea.
Knead cats bed
Main Post:
Has anyone purchased a knead cats bed? I've been seeing ads on Instagram and see they're a fairly new company. The beds are on the high end side, but I'm interested since it's an ergonomic bed. I would love input! There's reviews on their site, but I wanted to ask the broader community.
Top Comment: My cat hasn't slept on anything else since I bought it, so much so that I bought another so she will come to bed with me again.
What alternatives exist for bed cooling that don't require a subscription?
Main Post:
I was so excited to finally pull the trigger on 8 sleep and then saw it's now on a subscription model (but still with a hefty up-front cost).
Are there any half-decent alternatives in the market? I genuinely don't want or need the majority of fancy features offered by 8 sleep (and many are already handled by my smart watch). I just want the ability to cool my side of the bed while heating my partner's side. Or honestly even just cool my side of the bed (and then not cranking the AC should be sufficient for my partner).
I've heard of Bedjet, but unclear to me if that can be sufficiently targeted (i.e. cool my side without cooling my partner's side at all). Open to any suggestions!
Edit: Apparently BedJet does Two Zone temperature control, who knew? Anyone try this? Tempting given you don't need a subscription, internet, a smart phone, or water that could lead to leaks. About half the price.
Edit 2: I pulled the trigger on dual zone Bedjet and have no regrets! It's been a few months and we're both very happy with it. No buyer's remorse and I feel like I got a good amount of value for the $$ I paid.
Top Comment: (I haven't checked subscriptions.) The SleepMe Dock Pro is the closest alternative. From what I've read from reviews about the Dock Pro: Same cooling technique as the EightSleep The cooling power is similar or better or quicker Has a small fixed manual control, which the EightSleep does not have Both single and double person sizes Fits under the bed EightSleep app is better, more sleep tracking, smarter temperature control EightSleep cover/grid is more comfortable EightSleep is usually considered a bit more premium About the BedJet : Different cooling technique: it doesn't cool, it blows air, so the air temperature will not be lower than the ambient temperature. But it can still reduce the temperature under your sheets by blowing air. A lot cheaper. Some people don't like the feel of blowing air while trying to sleep Sleepnumber : I haven't read reviews about Sleepnumber systems yet. Climate360 smart bed Really expensive (About $10000) DualTemp individual layer Has a single person option Looks more like a pad than a cover like EightSleep Has a manual remote control Easy to install, but is less integrated in the mattress than the EightSleep For unknown reasons, I don't see much talk about Sleepnumber, although there are some Youtube videos about it.
Whats the cheapest way to make a good raised garden bed?
Main Post:
EDIT: since this post keeps getting views, the cheapest option for small beds are old pallets. Reclaimed wood from construction sites are free but you need permission to take otherwise it's considered theft. What I decided to do was used some wood scraps and pickets. Half the price ($4/6' board) of normal lumber.
Top Comment: Stand bag of potting soil, poke holes in bottom, open top, plant seeds
Can anyone Help me find a cheaper alternative to these expensive bed frames! Looking for a full-sized bed, under $400
Main Post: Can anyone Help me find a cheaper alternative to these expensive bed frames! Looking for a full-sized bed, under $400
Top Comment: Honestly if it's quality, hardwood (or at least solid pine) well constructed, $400 isn't bad for something you'll use for a decade. My roommate's second hand IKEA frame has disintegrated in less than a year despite numerous fixes.
Cheap raised garden beds!!! I bought all cull lumber at home Depot for 70% off! Have $200 into this including screws and brackets!! 14' long, 12' deep, 3' wide. Middle box is 4'x5'. Boxes are 8" -12" deep top to bottom!! Not too bad!!
